A Clinical Psychology & Counselling Service for Clients of all ages.

By Appointment only.

Welcome to Wimborne Psychology
Wimborne Psychology was established in 2018 and is an Independent Psychology Practice supporting children, young people and adults with their mental health and well-being.

Our clinicians have all worked in the NHS as well as being commissioned to work for the Local Authorities, schools or other agencies including care homes and charities.

Having witnessed first hand the strain within the NHS to offer assessments and therapeutic intervention in a timely way, Dr Alisha Azzopardi the founder,  felt there was a need to provide clients of all ages with an alternative experience.

Unlike publicly funded services, the length of your treatment is negotiated completely by you and your therapist. There is no cap on the number of sessions you may have but equally, we adopt a model of wellness and encourage independence. We therefore do not insist that you stay engaged in therapy for longer than you need to. We are also in a position to offer a service whereby you can opt back in and re-engage any time you need to. This flexibility allows for you to take a break from therapy but safe in the knowledge you can return should you feel unsettled and need additional sessions.

We will advise you on the frequency of your sessions; for example weekly or fortnightly to begin with but again this is based on evidence supporting effective treatment approaches. This frequency allows you to engage with your therapist and build a trusting relationship, which has been proven to increase the likelihood of you engaging in therapeutic work post assessment.

We have been built on reputation and our goal is to support you to make the changes you need to experience an improved sense of mental and physical wellness and stability.

As clinicians we are registered with our professional bodies and undertake clinical supervision as well as ongoing professional development to maintain high standards of care for all of our clients.
Clinical Psychology - Therapy - Counselling - Psychotherapy
Clinical Psychologists and Integrative Therapists are trained in a number of different therapies which allows them to find the right approach that will suit and meet your needs.

All of our work is drawn from evidence based research and we undertake regular supervision and ongoing training to keep up to date with new developments.

We also offer supervision to other clinicians and professionals as well as provide consultations and deliver training.

Please view each clinician's profile to develop a more detailed understanding of their background, training and what they are able to support you with.

* We do not offer Assessments or tailored interventions for young people with ADHD or those wishing to be assessed for Autism at present. We also do not work specifically with people on the Autism Spectrum.
What happens in sessions What happens in sessions
Following a free initial telephone consultation with a member of the team, we will arrange you a first appointment.

We always begin by undertaking an assessment which may last a few sessions. This helps us to agree on your needs and what changes you would like to make as well as which model of therapy is most suited.

With children and families we work 'Systemically' which means to include key family members and other important people at various stages of the treatment to ensure the best possible outcome for long term gains.

With older adolescents and adults, family members may be invited to sessions but the work is typically 1:1. This helps to create a safe and confidential space allowing you to develop the trust needed to work through the difficulties you may be facing.

With couples, both of you will attend the first session and an agreement will be made as to whether you wish to continue meeting as a couple or for one of you to come individually.

VIDEO SESSIONS and FACE to FACE SESSIONS Available

Due to the Coronavirus Outbreak, we have been offering appointments via Video Link. This has been working really well for clients and feedback has been incredibly positive. We have since returned to working Face to Face but will continue to provide both options which can be used intermittently.

I’m Dr Ali Sky, a Clinical Psychologist with 7 years of experience working in Mental Health services in the NHS and private sector. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Masters degree in Mental Health: Psychological Therapies, and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

I am from a mixed heritage and have lived in several countries, which has made me particularly interested in exploring how the many systems around us shape our values, hopes and expectations in life, through the societal, cultural, and generational beliefs they hold. Sometimes our personal values and beliefs can be at odds with our systems', which can be confusing and painful, and may lead us to feel lost.

I feel passionate about working creatively to help people across the lifespan, who are experiencing a broad range of challenges and/or mental health difficulties, such as:

  • Phobias & Fears
  • Worry or Rumination

  • Chronic Stress
  • Self Esteem or Confidence issues
  • Relationship Issues
  • Managing Change or Life Transitions
  • Living with Chronic Pain
  • Existential Crisis
I use a range of therapeutic frameworks to meet individual needs, tailoring an individual therapy plan according to the shared understanding we build through assessment.

In addition to exploring and working on particular difficulties, I view psychological therapy as a process through which I can support you to explore what is important to you, the path you wish to forge in life and what this means to you, at times when you may find yourself feeling stuck.

I strive to help you to feel comfortable to think and speak about the difficulties you and your family may be having, and to support you to achieve your goals.

I am fluent in French and Russian and could use this to facilitate work if needed.

I assess and assist people in understanding their mental health conditions and support clients towards recovery. I am a trained therapist in Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR), which reduces distress and aids the brain in processing trauma.

I have a wide range of experience in the communities of Dorset and Hampshire, including in-patient, crisis and home treatment, liaison psychiatry, community CAMHS and the Connections Service. I was part of a project that empowered young people under the justice system to be part of the decision-making process in their own care, and have been part of the team that redeveloped the community CAMHS service to improve its outcomes.

I am a positive person, passionate about good mental well-being and making changes in people's mental health. I strive to make people comfortable the moment they walk through the door, and believe nobody should ever be judged for their difficulties.

I know it can take courage to address any challenges you may be experiencing. I will always try to make you feel comfortable in my sessions and help you to set goals that will support your recovery.

Dr Lauren Ingram - Clinical Psychologist
I’m Dr Lauren Ingram, a Clinical Psychologist with 11 years experience working in the NHS. I have worked across a variety of services in my career, and have been privileged to work with a broad range of individuals, families, and teams. I therefore have good experience of working with a range of psychological difficulties and/or neurodevelopmental differences (such as Autism Spectrum Condition).

Within my current NHS role I work with children, teenagers, families and parents. An important part of this work is to see an individual as part of a ‘system’ rather than in isolation. Although we may work 1:1, we would also be able to consider these factors in our work together in order to develop our understanding and work towards your hopes.

I am dedicated to my work and feel honoured to work with people both during and following difficult and challenging times of their lives. I understand how daunting it can be to seek support initially and make that first step, and then secondly to meet with someone like me. I will endeavour to put you at ease in order for us to work together on an understanding about what is happening for you, your hopes (and maybe reservations), and a plan of how we will work towards the future you would like to see beyond the end of therapy. Our work can draw on a variety of approaches to suit you and your goals.

I feel passionately about working with people to help them overcome the difficulties they face, to maximise their wellbeing and to fulfil their potential.

I realise that meeting a psychologist can feel daunting. I strive to ensure that you are always made to feel safe, comfortable and able to talk, no matter your age and background. I will always work with you to develop a shared understanding of the difficulties, how you would like things to be different, and an intervention plan to get you there. I am experienced in working with families where there may be differing views about problems and solutions.

I have worked across a number of centres of excellence, including Guys & St Thomas’ Hospital, Evelina London Children’s Hospital, King’s College Hospital and the Tavistock Centre. We remember what it feels like to be a child and also a teenager. Our experiences weren't always positive and we think this is why we honestly feel a connection to ensuring that we can support children, young people and their families in their daily life battles.

If you are a child about to meet us, it is important to know that we are friendly and not at all scary.

We try our best to make your time with us exciting, fun and enjoyable. Of course we will have to talk about some difficult things. This might make you feel sad, anxious or upset but our job is to help you understand why and to give you and those who care for you tools and strategies to help make things better.

With time, we hope that you feel you can trust us and that we can work as a team. We are here to help you and those who care for you.

Depression and Relationship Insecurities:

When I started with Dr Alisha I was a scared, depressed and anxious girl, really feeling like I had the weight of the word on my shoulders. I had an initial consultation with Alisha; I felt at ease and hopeful to continue with her, thanks to her calm manner and encouraging attitude. As I started sessions with Alisha I valued her creative approaches to help me understand my feelings, integrated with useful discussion of social factors and biological causes. Continuing my sessions I appreciated how well Alisha understood and empathised with me, whilst also being objective and impartial. I came to enjoy, and look forward to my sessions, as I always feel listened to, valued and supported- Alisha is easy to talk to and I have come to trust her greatly, and I can speak freely about difficult topics without fear of judgement. A year later, I only need to drop in occasionally, and I am a confident, optimistic and truly happy young woman who is excited for what lies ahead. I feel able to tackle any challenges that may come my way, but I know that I am always welcome back to Alisha’s (very pretty) office. Thank you Alisha for everything you have done for me, my family and I are truly grateful, and I would wholeheartedly recommend Alisha’s services to anyone who is looking for a psychologist.

Depression and Relationship Insecurities

Post-Natal Trauma and Covid Anxiety:

I could never thank you enough for all you've done to help me. It has changed the life of both me and my family. I feel so lucky to have your support and I know I have had the best care possible. I was desperate to know things would be OK and your faith in me and help has been integral to my recovery.

Post-Natal Trauma and Covid Anxiety

Anxiety and Depression:

"Before my sessions with you I had next to no faith in therapy...I felt as if I'd never get better…what you have done for me is phenomenal. I am so lucky to have had you as a therapist and you have taught me so much"

Bereavement and Life Transitions:

"The last 6 months have been really difficult but I couldn't have got through it without you"

Bereavement and Life Transitions

Night-time Anxiety and disturbed sleep.:

My son has always had difficulty sleeping alone since he was about 8 months old. As he got older he became anxious and fearful of being alone at night eventually resulting in my husband and I sleeping separately after years of disrupted sleep, as our son would get into our bed every night, he is now 11! We contacted Alisha as we were at the end of our rope after trying many, many different things. Alisha was amazing. Despite being in lockdown, she counselled our son via Zoom, helping him to talk through his worries and arming him with tools to help him overcome his worries. She also helped us as parents to understand and help our son get through the barriers preventing him from sleeping. After an initial rocky start and further reassurance from Alisha, using her suggestions, we conquered the sleep issue practically in one night. It was tough but knowing I was not causing my son any harm helped me get through it. Once the first night was accomplished, my son has not come into our bed once and we are now several months down the line. He does still at times wake in the night but is armed with the tools to help him go back to sleep on his own without disturbing us. The whole family is happier as we are all getting the sleep we all desperately needed. My only wish is that we had found Alisha a few years ago.

Night-time Anxiety and disturbed sleep.

Depression:

“I just wanted to say a really big thank you from myself and in fact the whole family because the impact you have made on M has affected us all. You have treated her with the respect and sympathy she required and really listened to what she needed.”

Depression

Sleep difficulties and Generalised Anxiety:

"Alisha has been fantastic in helping our family with the sleeping and anxiety issues that our daughter was facing. She helped us to come up with practical solutions that we could put in place straight away, and in just a short space of time these methods have equipped our daughter with the tools she needs to feel calm, worry free and able to sleep soundly. Alisha’s contact with us between sessions also helped us feel that we weren’t alone in our efforts when implementing the changes we’d discussed face-to-face. It’s hard to overstate the positive impact that Alisha’s expertise and support has had on our lives, and we all feel extremely lucky to have been able to work with her at a time when we needed help."

Sleep difficulties and Generalised Anxiety

Bi-polar Disorder:

"Without your advice and encouragement I don’t think I would have got to this point and would still be struggling on my own. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me and for the advice you gave — it was so kind of you and above and beyond. I am deeply grateful."

Bi-polar Disorder

Managing Change and difficult life events:

‘I found Alisha to be very helpful, she got me through some difficult times and I built a strong connection with her very easily. Having counselling with her is something I would definitely recommend’.

Parent of a teenage client who had sessions during 'lock-down':

Just wanted to say thank you so much for the sessions with X. It has been immeasurable how you've helped him. Although I feel quite sad today at ending the sessions I felt that X was in a great place mentally. He has become much more talkative and positive, which is a great relief.

Anxiety and transition:

Two years ago I hated myself. I am over seventy years old and was on tablets but still suffered from almost constant anxiety bordering on paranoia. My worried family almost flew me back from a supposed holiday in Majorca. My doctor told me that other patients had found Dr Azzopardi very helpful. I believe I could hardly string a coherent sentence together when I first saw Alisha. For six months I saw her every week and made incredible progress. Since then I have been very happy and now see her online about every six weeks to ensure I don’t have a relapse. I wholeheartedly recommend Alisha. She is incredibly helpful and naturally very kind and understanding.

Parent of an Anxious Child:

Alisha was extremely knowledgeable and approachable. She supported both us and our daughter in an age appropriate and engaging way. All of the sessions had immediate positive effects and improved our daughters mental heath, independence and self-confidence as a result. Thank you for being there.

Parent of an Anxious Child

Generalised Anxiety and Relationship Difficulties:

I can highly recommend Dr Alisha Azzopardi. From the first conversation, I felt at ease and I could trust her. She was not judgemental in any way and is very flexible to the issues I brought to therapy each week. I feel like I can look back on my childhood with more happiness now. It was even possible to bring my husband in to have a session of relationship therapy, which benefited us. I work in NHS Mental Health services and to be fair, I do not see many people with the expertise and skills that Dr Alisha has.
