Dr. Joseph Ibbitson
Clinical Psychologist
I am Joseph, a Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years experience working across a wide range of NHS and private services. This includes work with people dealing with mental health difficulties, cognitive issues, adjustment to physical health problems and relationship-based problems.
I completed my Doctoral training in Clinical Psychology in 2020. Since then, I’ve enjoyed using my training and experience to continue to support people at different stages of life. I’m happy to see people individually, or with other family members if that feels helpful. Whilst I enjoy meeting people of all ages and genders, I have a particular specialism in working with boys and young men, recognising the specific needs and challenges this population face.
I am committed to trying to gain a compassionate understanding of people’s unique experience. I do this partly by trying to reduce any blame and shame that people may feel about their mental health and/or coming to see a therapist. I also feel it is important that people are supported to connect with their personal strengths and resources, and see how these can fit in with their hopes and intentions for their lives.
I understand from my own previous experience, that coming to speak to a stranger about personal issues can feel really scary, particularly at a time when things feel so challenging. I will always endeavour to help you to feel safe and understood in our appointments.
I am trained and experienced in using a range of therapeutic frameworks including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Systemic and Family Therapy approaches. These frameworks place a different emphasis on factors that contribute towards psychological distress, and ways to alleviate it.
Sometimes I use these models in pure form, and sometimes I integrate the ideas depending on the clients need.
In my spare time, I enjoy connecting with loved ones and stay active through running, hiking and surfing. I’m also passionate about environmental stewardship, volunteering at a local community garden and working part-time at a forest school.
