What happens after referral

Children and families

With children and families we work 'systemically' which means to include key family members / important people at various stages of the treatment. This aims to ensure the best possible outcome for long term gains.

Claire Williams, Practice Coordinator, joined our team in 2021 and will be your first point of contact and available to you throughout your journey with us. Claire has a eclectic background in Journalism and Feature Writing and a vivid interest in Psychology. She holds a BA (Hon) Degree in Media and Cultural Studies.

Following your enquiry, you will be sent a referral form to complete online. Once returned, this will be screened by our Clinic Director & Principal Clinical Psychologist, Dr Alisha Azzopardi who will recommend a match to the most appropriate clinician who will also review your referral.

Following this, Claire will arrange an assessment appointment for you and issue you with an invoice for payment. If there is a waiting period, she will inform you of the outcome and keep you updated on your position on the waiting list.

Your matched clinician will begin by undertaking an assessment which may last a few sessions. This helps them to understand your needs, what changes you would like to make as well as which model of therapy is most suited to you.

Claire is known for being incredibly approachable, calm, understanding, empathic and a vital part of our team. If ant any point you need to speak with her, she can arrange a telephone call to assist you.

Adolescents and Adults

With older adolescents and adults, family members may be invited to sessions but the work is typically 1:1. This helps to create a safe and confidential space allowing you to develop the trust needed to work through the difficulties you are facing.

Couples

With couples, both of you will attend the first session and an agreement will be made as to whether you wish to continue meeting as a couple or for one of you to come individually.

Therapy session length

Therapy sessions last for approximately 50 minutes unless otherwise agreed.

  • "I could never thank you enough for all you've done to help me. It has changed the life of both me and my family. I feel so lucky to have your support and I know I have had the best care possible. I was desperate to know things would be OK and your faith in me and help has been integral to my recovery.

    Post-Natal Trauma and Covid Anxiety

  • "Without your advice and encouragement I don’t think I would have got to this point and would still be struggling on my own. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me and for the advice you gave — it was so kind of you and above and beyond. I am deeply grateful."

    Adult with bi-polar disorder

  • "Our clinician at Wimborne Psychology was extremely knowledgeable and approachable. She supported both us and our daughter in an age appropriate and engaging way. All of the sessions had immediate positive effects and improved our daughters mental heath, independence and self-confidence as a result. Thank you for being there."

    Parent of an Anxious Child

  • "I can highly recommend Wimborne Psychology. From the first conversation, I felt at ease with my clinician and I could trust her. She was not judgmental in any way and is very flexible to the issues I brought to therapy each week. I feel like I can look back on my childhood with more happiness now. It was even possible to bring my husband in to have a session of relationship therapy, which benefited us. I work in NHS Mental Health services and to be fair, I do not see many people with the expertise and skills that my clinician had."

    Generalised Anxiety and Relationship Difficulties

  • "You did wonders for W's confidence and I'd have no hesitation recommending you to friends and others."

    Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

  • "Before my sessions with you I had next to no faith in therapy...I felt as if I'd never get better…what you have done for me is phenomenal. I am so lucky to have had you as a therapist and you have taught me so much."

    Anxiety and Depression

  • "When I started with my clinician I was a scared, depressed and anxious girl… I had an initial consultation; I felt at ease and hopeful… thanks to her calm manner and encouraging attitude… A year later, I only need to drop in occasionally… a confident, optimistic and truly happy young woman.

    Depression and Relationship Insecurities

  • "The last 6 months have been really difficult but I couldn't have got through it without you."

    Bereavement and Life Transitions

  • "My son has always had difficulty sleeping alone…anxious and fearful of being alone at night. We contacted Wimborne Psychology. Our clinician was amazing…helping him to talk through his worries. The whole family is happier…we are all getting the sleep we desperately needed."

    Night-time Anxiety and disturbed sleep.

  • "I just wanted to say a really big thank you from myself and in fact the whole family because the impact you have made on M has affected us all. You have treated her with the respect and sympathy she required and really listened to what she needed.”

    Depression

  • "Wimborne Psychology has been fantastic in helping our family with the sleeping and anxiety issues that our daughter was facing. Our clinician helped us to come up with practical solutions...in just a short space of time these methods have equipped our daughter with the tools she needs to feel calm, worry free and able to sleep soundly. It’s hard to overstate the positive impact that their expertise and support has had on our lives"
